Feeling Lost? It's Not You. It's Your Roadmap

“I’m doing everything right, but nothing is happening.”
This is one of the most common phrases I hear from job seekers – particularly those who’ve successfully landed roles in the past but now feel stuck or lost in the process.
Time and energy go into thoughtful applications. Networking is happening. Leads are coming in. And yet…glass ceiling.
At this point, even very strong candidates start to wonder: is something wrong with me? Have I peaked? Am I no longer relevant?
In most cases, the reality is quite the opposite.
You’ve grown. You’ve evolved. But you’re still using a strategy or roadmap that no longer aligns with where you need and want to go. If this resonates, it’s worth asking yourself a few key questions:
AM I CLEAR ON WHERE TO APPLY MY SKILLS AND ENERGY?When you understand both your strengths and the environments where you thrive, targeting becomes much easier.
If you’re a leader experienced in complex, matrixed organizations and successfully deploying large budgets, smaller companies might not yet be ready for or need your skill set.
On the flip side, if you’re entrepreneurial and creative, highly structured organizations with rigid processes might not value your fresh perspectives and insights for doing things differently. Earlier stage or high-growth companies will love your grit and can-do spirit. Alignment with an organization’s maturity and culture matters as much as your experience.
AM I TALKING TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE?If you’re aiming higher, your network needs to reflect that. Peers are helpful for insight. But opportunities at the next level typically come from relationships with decision-makers and leaders operating where you want to go—not where you’ve been. This often means pushing beyond your comfort zone and building connections with people who challenge your thinking and expand your perspective.
AM I PROPERLY VALUING MY EXPERIENCE? IS IT REFLECTED IN MY NARRATIVE?This is the most common way people get lost. They apply to roles below their capabilities— sometimes because they’ve outgrown their current role without recognition, sometimes out of a sense of urgency to land something quickly. Sometimes because they don’t want to seem too experienced or they don’t believe their skills are credentialed enough.
So they hedge. They minimize their successes. They position themselves for “just in case” or a variety of things. But the market responds to how you present yourself and a weak narrative will set you back.
Make sure your narrative reflects your full value and is focused on the whole YOU. Otherwise, you’ll either be overlooked for being “overqualified,” funneled into roles that don’t move you forward, or worst of all - ignored for not being focused. Your story is your most valuable asset and will alway point you in the right direction.
Be honest about your growth and value and all of your passions and skills. Target organizations that align with who you are now, not who you were. Build relationships with people who stretch you. And, recalibrate your strategy accordingly.
Because the problem was never that you were lost.

You just needed a better roadmap!

Great points to consider!
