It's the Year of the Horse! Where are You Headed?

Updated: May 27

Happy New Year!

According to the Chinese calendar, 2026 is the year of the horse. It caught my attention and was inspirational because it signifies a time for unleashing individual energy and pursuing transformation.

So many of my clients feel they are working in a constant state of flux. They come to coaching seeking a path to stability.  They want more predictability in their careers, job searches and they want to be empowered to do the things they love to do most.

This is perfectly natural in a world where:

  • job markets are volatile due to mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing and the growing use of fractional or contract professionals;

  • roles are evolving or being completely redefined with the integration of AI and new automation;

  • new technologies being introduced at an accelerated pace are creating new cycles of change much more frequently.

With the pace of change increasing and job security being a notion our grandparents knew better than we do, how is it possible to make sense of the madness and navigate to calmer waters?

It starts with a shift in mindset. Careers are no longer long, predictable, neatly mappable chapters. They are more like a string of vignettes – distinct experiences that come together to create a unique story for each individual.   Change is inevitable. And, the old maxim to “pick a lane and stay in it” no longer serves most professionals well.

The new key to success is adaptability. If you are ready to change lanes when necessary and with intention, you can control the way your story unfolds and navigate to paths where you find both reward and growth.  This is also an amazing opportunity to tailor your career on your own terms — aligning with your passions and strengths.

Here are a few practical ways to reframe your approach to your career:

  • Revisit your narrative – are you talking about yourself in terms of a title or a boxed in role? Or do you begin with an “I am“ statement that reveals who you are, what you care about, and where you want to go?  Practice talking about your value proposition with others.

  •  Create a bucket list of skills and experiences that you want to develop to remain fulfilled, engaged, and relevant.  Are you actively building new skills, meeting new people, stretching yourself on an on-going basis?

  • Invest in your personal communityBe visible and be active. Seek mentors, make friends, help others. Careers move faster when they are fueled by relationships not only resumes.

  • Invest in your humanity.  We cannot slow the pace of change but we can choose how we meet it. Instead of fear, choose curiosity; make decisions based on values; and nurture your passions and aptitudes to refine your individual value proposition.  Your unique value proposition and identity are things that technology cannot replicate.

Whether you follow Chinese astrology or not, the notion of charging forward on a path of progress and growth seems like a good way to start a year!
